Let’s be honest — who doesn’t love an appetizer that takes almost no effort and looks amazing? These skewers check all the boxes: flavorful, fresh and have the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, thanks to the elderberry balsamic glaze.

The first time I made these, I was in a bit of a pinch before a dinner party. I had completely forgotten that I agreed to bring an appetizer. How could I forget? So I looked through my fridge, hoping to get a bright idea while scanning the ingredients.

Funny enough, I came up with a great idea. That idea happens to be this very recipe you’re about to make. They melted in your mouth, and everyone loved them — it was definitely a hit.

So, whether you’re hosting a casual gathering or attending a get-together, these scrumptious skewers will be a crowd-pleaser for sure. Plus, they are so easy to customize and even easier to prepare ahead of time.

Let me tell you what makes these caprese skewers so special.

Why I Choose Elderberry Balsamic Glaze

You may wonder why I made this an elderberry balsamic glaze instead of a regular plain balsamic glaze. Well, the flavor of elderberries mixed with balsamic vinegar completely elevates this appetizer, adding a wonderful variety of flavors. But that’s not the only reason why I chose elderberries.

Here’s the real deal — elderberries are a wellness-packed superfood. There are countless benefits you'll experience with elderberries in your diet, and I’m always looking for ways to help my family stay healthy.

Here are just a few of these amazing benefits:

  • Boosts your immune system: Elderberries contain antioxidants that build and support your immune system.

  • Are rich in vitamins and minerals: Incorporating elderberries into your everyday routine can do wonders, as they contain health-boosting minerals and vitamins.

  • Reduce inflammation: The flavonoids in elderberries are great for combating and relieving inflammation.

  • Can relieve cold & sickness: The antioxidants, flavonoids and vitamins in elderberries are perfect for fighting off sickness and shortening its duration.

This is why I try to use elderberries as much as I can. Who wouldn't want to reap all the benefits? It’s super simple to use Organic Elderberry Syrup in everyday dishes, which is what my recipe blog is all about!

Now that you know the power of elderberries and why you should always stock your kitchen with my syrup, let’s take a look at what you need to prepare this delicious appetizer I keep raving about.

Step by Step Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions, and you'll indulge in these flavorful caprese skewers before you know it.

  1. Let’s start by making the elderberry balsamic glaze. Mix the balsamic vinegar, maple syrup and elderberry syrup in a saucepan and bring to a simmer at medium heat. Then, turn the heat to medium-low and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally. It will take around 10 minutes for the glaze to thicken and be ready to cool.

  2. After the glaze is finished, let it cool to room temperature before proceeding to the next steps.

  3. Mix together the Italian seasoning and olive oil in a small bowl. Stir in some salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Now, add the mozzarella balls to this bowl and toss them in the olive oil mixture.

  5. Stick the cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and basil on the skewers, alternating as you go so that each skewer has three cherry tomatoes, three basil leaves and two mozzarella balls.

  6. Drizzle the elderberry balsamic glaze over your caprese skewers and serve.

They’re so adorable, right?! Now go ahead and enjoy these skewers — you’ve earned it.

Perfect Pairings

These caprese skewers are a great appetizer, but they’re also super tasty when paired with other yummy treats.

Here are some pairings I know you’ll love:

  • Bread: You can’t go wrong with caprese and bread, whether it's pita bread or crusty sourdough.

  • Wine: Champagne, red wine or white wine — pairing mozzarella and tomatoes with wine is always wonderful.

  • Pizza: These skewers are a great side dish to complement pizza — keep the Italian theme going.

  • Prosciutto & Crackers: Eat these skewers with some crackers and prosciutto for a beautiful combination of flavors.

These pairings will really up your game, but either way, these caprese skewers are to die for, and I know you’ll be satisfied.

All you have to do is put them in a sealed glass container and store them in the fridge. They will stay good for a week.
