Elderberry Syrup FAQ

Elderberry Queen's Elderberry Syrup with a daily dose.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about our Elderberry Syrup.

WHAT ARE ELDERBERRIES AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Elderberries are grown on a plant called elder bushes and are most commonly used for immune health. These little berries are packed with flavonoids, antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients that boost your immune system. They can also help with inflammation, heart health, and stress.

Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, called elderberries his “medicine chest.”

DOES IT HELP WITH COLDS AND THE FLU?

Studies have shown that elderberries can ease cold and flu symptoms. It’s also been shown to reduce the duration of a cold or the flu by two days.

WHAT EVIDENCE IS THERE SHOWING ITS EFFECT ON COLDS AND THE FLU?

There have been quite a few studies done on elderberries. Here are a few.

In vitro, elderberries were shown to be effective against 10 strains of the influenza virus.

In this study, 60 people with influenza A & B, those who took 15 ml of elderberry extract four times per day showed symptom improvement in 2-4 days, while the control group took 7-8 days to improve.

A meta-analysis of randomized trials of 180 participants studying the effects of elderberry for cold and flu concluded that it is indeed effective in substantially reducing upper respiratory symptoms.

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study of 312 air travelers taking capsules containing 300 mg of elderberry extract three times per day found that those who got sick experienced a shorter duration of illness. They also experienced less severe symptoms than those taking the placebo.

DOES ELDERBERRY HELP WITH COVID-19?

While there hasn’t been enough research to answer this with absolute certainty, we do believe in the effectiveness of elderberry syrup. Evidence shows that elderberry boosts your immune system. With a virus such as COVID, which is extremely contagious, it’s crucial to have strong immune system health. So we will continue to take our daily dose!

What about the “cytokine storm” that everyone’s talking about?

"Elderberry can increase inflammatory cytokines in people with an otherwise healthy condition, that’s desirable that helps us fight infections; however, there’s no evidence that elderberry would increase the risk of a cytokine storm," Dr. Chris D'adamo said.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR ELDERBERRY SYRUP?

Our elderberry syrup is made with seven simple, organic ingredients — elderberries, aronia berries, apple cider vinegar, honey, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. That’s it!

No fillers, thickeners, added sugar, or artificial ingredients.

IS YOUR SYRUP ORGANIC?

Yes, it is! Our elderberry syrup is proudly USDA Certified Organic.

CAN YOU TASTE THE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR?

Not at all. We’ve added just enough for it to not come through in the flavor, but still deliver all of the incredible health benefits apple cider vinegar has to offer.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR ELDERBERRIES?

We source our elderberries from either Europe or the US, it all depends on the season.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TAKE ELDERBERRY SYRUP AND WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED DOSAGE?

It can be taken daily as an immune booster. We recommend ages one and two: take 1-2 tsp, ages three and up: take 1 Tbsp.

If you feel like you’re getting sick, use our recommended intensive dosage. Ages one and two: 2-4 tsp twice a day. Ages three and up: 2-3 Tbsp twice daily.

MY KIDS DON’T LIKE THE TASTE OF ELDERBERRY. WHAT CAN I DO?

Kids can be picky! We understand that. That’s why we’ve crafted a syrup that’s easy to add in to some of their favorite foods.

Try adding their daily dose into:

  • Smoothies

WHAT MAKES YOUR ELDERBERRY SYRUP DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BRANDS?

Most elderberry syrups found in regular stores are chock full of artificial ingredients, colors, preservatives, added sugar, and thickeners.

It’s almost impossible to find an elderberry syrup that’s made with real ingredients and organic. With us, you get both!

We’ve created incredible value with our organic elderberry syrup – giving you the best market price per fl/oz.

Elderberry Queen is proudly certified as a woman-owned business by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).

WHAT IS THE CONSISTENCY LIKE?

It’s best described as juice-like! We stay away from artificial ingredients – which means no thickeners, sugars, glucose, glycerin, or fructose. This results in a smooth texture that requires no convincing for kiddos to consume.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the concentration is less just because of the consistency. We have a much higher concentration of elderberry in our syrup than most brands that produce thicker syrups. Our seven simple ingredients come together in a powerful way to build your immune system, and the consistency doesn’t affect that at all.

This elderberry syrup is crafted from a homemade recipe created by a mom of 5 kids. So you can be sure it’s mom-made and kid-approved!

Be sure to shake the bottle well before each use. It’s common for the spices and fibers from the berries to settle at the bottom. Don’t like the amount of sediment in your syrup? Just filter with a simple coffee filter — it works great!

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST AND HOW DO I STORE IT?

Our elderberry syrup has a shelf life of 2 years unopened. Once opened, it needs to be refrigerated and is good for up to 6 months.

You can also freeze the syrup in ice cube trays for up to a year and still enjoy all of the same benefits. After thawing, use within 6 months.

Try tossing a few cubes in your kombucha or sparkling water, it’s delicious!

WHAT ALLERGENS IS YOUR SYRUP FREE FROM?

Our syrup does not contain gluten, dairy, meat, peanuts, sesame, soy, shellfish, yeast, or eggs.

IS IT SAFE TO TAKE YOUR ELDERBERRY SYRUP WHILE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?

Unfortunately, more research is needed before I can answer this question. We have a lot of pregnant and breastfeeding mama’s using our elderberry syrup.

We recommend checking with your physician so you can be sure it is the best choice for you.
